Greenbush (AFP) – Marian Gaborik, slated to play for Slovakia at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, limped off the ice at New York Rangers practice Tuesday after he was cut on the right knee by the skate of a teammate.

Gaborik, the Rangers’ leading scorer this NHL season, skated in on goalie Henrik Lundqvist during a breakaway drill and tried to jump over Lundqvist’s leg.

They collided and Gaborik fell to the ice.

“I thought he was joking,” Lundqvist said. “My skate caught his knee. Hopefully he’ll be OK.”

Right wing Gaborik, who has a team high 35 goals and 69 points, skated off with assistance before receiving stitches at the team’s practice facility.

It was not immediately clear if Gaborik would be able to play in the Rangers’ home game against Nashville, but assistant coach Jim Schoenfeld seemed optimistic the injury was not too serious.

“It’s not like it’s a twist to the groin or the knee,” Schoenfeld said. “It’s just a laceration.”

The Rangers have three games this week before the NHL takes its two-week Olympic break.
