2010 Olympic Transportation plan a success – News Releases : Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

Citizens urged to keep travelling smart as changes to the road network remain for Paralympic Winter Games

Vancouver, BC – The Olympic and Paralympic Transportation Team (OPTT) today thanked the people of Metro Vancouver and the Sea to Sky regions for making the 2010 integrated Olympic transportation plan a success, while urging people to keep traveling smart in view of changes to the transportation network for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.

Transportation planners – charged with one of the most complex and critical elements of the Games – set the lofty goal of achieving at least a 30 per cent reduction in vehicle use during the Olympic Games, in order to ensure athletes, officials and others could get to their events on time and local residents could move efficiently.

Throughout the Games, Metro Vancouver and the Sea to Sky corridor saw record numbers of people walking, cycling and taking transit, and an overall reduction in vehicle use.  In particular, vehicle use was reduced by an average of more than 35 per cent each day. In addition, TransLink, the public transit operator in Metro Vancouver, moved an average of 1.5 million people per day during the Games, an increase from 730,000 trips per day, while BC Transit, the public transportation provider in the Sea to Sky corridor, saw five times the ridership on the public transit system over normal winter levels.

Paralympic transportation plans

Venues

Building on this success, the OPTT is reminding the public to continue to ‘travel smart’ during the Paralympic Winter Games. While most road networks have been returned to normal, some closures and parking restrictions remain around Paralympic venues during the transition to and throughout the Paralympic Games. These areas include UBC Thunderbird Arena, the Vancouver Paralympic Centre, Paralympic Village Vancouver and BC Place (for March 12 Opening Ceremony). In Whistler, these areas include Whistler Creekside and Paralympic Village Whistler. The public is asked to continue to use sustainable modes of transportation throughout the month of March 2010 and beyond. Details of the 2010 integrated Paralympic transportation plan are outlined in the attached fact sheet.

“We were very happy with the transportation choices that everyone made during the Olympic Winter Games,,” Penny Ballem, city manager of the City of Vancouver said on behalf of the OPTT. “With fewer changes to the road network during the Paralympic Winter Games, we encourage residents, commuters and visitors to continue to leave their vehicles behind and walk, cycle or take transit to get around during this period.”

“It’s important we ensure our Paralympic athletes and other guests have a smooth, positive experience here during the Games,” added Terry Wright, VANOC executive vice president, services and Games operations. “With road closures, parking restrictions and increased volumes around Paralympic Games venues, traveling smart is still the way to go and everyone should know before they go.”

Paralympic Torch relay and Opening Ceremony March 11 and 12

The public is also reminded the Paralympic torch relay will be underway in downtown Vancouver from 2 pm on March 11 to 2 pm on March 12. The current proposed route is a loop that will involve areas along Robson, Granville and Smithe Streets. Traffic will continue to flow on most major streets, however, there will be road closures and restrictions to vehicle traffic along a few blocks of Robson, Smithe, Granville and Bute. Other cross streets will remain open with rolling intermittent road closures as the torch runs past. Commuters are advised to find alternate routes and modes of transportation around the Robson Square area for March 11 and 12.

In addition, temporary road closures and pedestrian corridors will be in place in downtown Vancouver on March 12 to support the Paralympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony at BC Place. Cambie Bridge, as well as portions of Beatty Street and Robson Street will be closed for most of the day on March 12, so driving will be challenging. Up to date information will be made available on the Host City website through travelsmart2010.ca,so that everyone can plan ahead.

Other transportation highlights

  • Public transportation service will reflect the anticipated number of transit riders during the Paralympic Games, with event level service planned to serve Paralympic venues in Vancouver, and the Games Express service continuing in Whistler.
  • Paralympic Games event tickets include access to public transit for the day of the event.
  • Olympic lanes removed in Vancouver as of March 2, though a temporary Paralympic lane will remain on Highway 99 in Whistler from Function Junction to the Village.
  • Sea to Sky traffic checkpoint removed as of March 1; no permits required to travel north of Squamish.
  • Lane demarcations on Highway 99 will be removed between March 1 and 5.

The 15 headliners, which include Feist, Usher, Our Lady Peace, and The Fray, will perform for one night each from February 13 to 27 during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games at Whistler Medals Plaza, a world-class outdoor amphitheatre built expressly for the nightly events and the Closing Ceremony of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. “Celebrations in Whistler will be rockin’ for 15 incredible nights during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games with this impressive lineup of top solo artists and bands ? all playing outdoors under the stars in honour of the world’s best athletes and their triumphs,” said Christy Nicolay, VANOC’s vice president of sport production and Victory Ceremonies. “Thanks to our partners, the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Government of Canada, we’ll have a fantastic venue for these events ?Whistler Medals Plaza.”

Whistler Medals Plaza is an intimate space designed to serve the needs of the Sea to Sky community not only at Games time but also in the long term. Given its space limitations and the restrictions on travel into Whistler, access to Whistler Victory Ceremony tickets is limited to residents living from Squamish to Mount Currie.

The ticketed nightly ceremonies in Whistler ? which kick off on February 13 with the All American Rejects and the presentation of medals for men’s ski jumping and downhill skiing, as well as the women’s 7.5-kilometre sprint event in biathlon ? are designed to pay tribute to the world’s best competing in 2010 and celebrate Canada’s hosting of one of the world’s largest sporting events.

Whistler Medals Plaza includes a large “turntable” stage to accommodate both the medals presentations and the entertainment programming. Adjacent to each side of the stage will be video walls featuring Vancouver 2010 Look of the Games’ graphics, as well as two giant screens showing highlights of the athletes’ performances and enhancing the activity on stage.

Gates open nightly at 4:30 pm (Pacific Time) with a DJ and interactive games for the crowd, followed by a live simulcast of the nightly provincial and territorial preshow held at BC Place in Vancouver. At 7:00 pm, the medal ceremonies will be held for the winning athletes of the day at Whistler-area venues, followed 30 minutes later by that night’s headlining act. The evening celebrations will end at approximately 8:30 pm.

All medal presentations in Whistler will be televised around the world as part of Olympic broadcasting plans for the 2010 Winter Games. The nightly concerts on February 13, 22 and 27 will also be broadcast live.

Ticketing information for Whistler Victory Ceremonies
Whistler Victory Ceremony tickets will be distributed to the public in the Sea to Sky region through a contest operated in partnership with Tourism Whistler at www.whistler.com

The contest will operate for 11 days, starting on January 4, 2010 and is open to residents from Squamish to Mount Currie. Entries at www.whistler.com will be limited to one per e-mail address.

VANOC releases tickets for figure skating training sessions and Paralympic Closing Ceremony – News Releases : Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics

Vancouver, BC ? The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) is announcing two new exciting and affordable ticketing options for the 2010 Winter Games. Starting Friday, December 11 at 10:00 am (Pacific Time) tickets for figure skating training sessions and the Closing Ceremony for the Paralympic Winter Games will go on sale to the Canadian public on a first-come, first served basis.

Tickets for figure skating training will cost $30, while tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games’ Closing Ceremony will cost just $60. See below for additional details, including where to purchase.

Figure Skating Training Sessions

The figure skating training tickets are a great chance for fans to watch star athletes just hours or days before they perform before the world at Pacific Coliseum. The skaters could include Canadian medal hopefuls Patrick Chan and Joannie Rochette, world champions American Evan Lysacek, South Korea’s Kim Yu-Na, as well as Russia’s ice dancing stars Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin.

“This is an amazing opportunity for the public to see some of the best skaters in the world in a more relaxed atmosphere,” said Bev Viger, manager of figure skating for VANOC. “Athletes enjoy having an audience to perform to during their training and this helps build energy in advance of competition.”

Tickets are available for seven figure skating training sessions at Pacific Coliseum, where competitions in ice dance, single and pairs figure skating will be held during the Games. Tickets cost $30 each plus fees and go on sale Friday, December 11 at 10:00 am (Pacific Time) online ONLY at www.vancouver2010.com and by phone at 1.800.TICKETS (1.800.842.5387) or TDD/TTY 604.629.7140.

After the first day of sale, figure skating training session tickets will also be sold subject to availability at Main Ticket Centres in downtown Vancouver at Robson Square and in Whistler near Whistler Medals Plaza.

Paralympic Closing Ceremony

The Closing Ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games will be an intimate open air event at the brand-new Whistler Medals Plaza in the heart of the resort. The evening will include breath-taking entertainment and the parade of Paralympians from around the world as they march into the amphitheatre. The night will mark the official end of the 2010 Winter Games.

Ceremony tickets will cost $60 each plus fees and go on sale Friday, December 11 at 10:00 am (Pacific Time) at www.vancouver2010.com, VANOC’s two Main Ticket Centre locations, as well as by phone at 1.800.TICKETS (1.800.842.5387) or TDD/TTY 604.629.7140.

Helpful tips:

  • VANOC reminds customers that Visa is the only payment card accepted online or by phone.

Visa cards and cash are accepted at the Main Ticket Centres.

  • Plan ahead for purchases and ensure you have sufficient credit available in your account as purchases will be charged immediately.
  • Be wary of tickets offered for sale through unofficial channels. The only official sources for Canadians to buy tickets to the 2010 Winter Games are www.vancouver2010.com (in partnership with VANOC’s official ticketing services supplier tickets.com) and official 2010 Winter Games hospitality partners Jet Set Sports and CoSport.
  • Be vigilant about individuals or companies offering “guaranteed” tickets for sale. For most people, even a “money-back” guarantee is little consolation for the disappointment, inconvenience and embarrassment they will experience if they discover at the gate that their ticket is invalid.
